Teaching Fellows Program

An introduction to the South Carolina Teaching Fellows Program and the teaching profession as a leadership career. This seminar provides students with an orientation to college expectations, available support systems, and the Teaching Fellows community while fostering cohort development and mentoring relationships with the Campus Director and fellow Fellows. Emphasis is placed on understanding the role of teachers as leaders through the study of leadership theories, leadership styles, diversity, classroom and community leadership, and the characteristics and practices of effective educational leaders.

Emphasis is placed on leadership development, self-assessment, professional growth, resilience, service learning, and the application of leadership principles through engagement with educators, schools, and the broader educational community. A culminating seminar focused on the transition from teacher candidate to professional educator. Through continued exploration of leadership and the leadership skills of effective teachers, Fellows examine professional responsibilities, teacher identity, and the application of effective and innovative teaching practices. Topics include professional engagement, school and community involvement, financial planning, work-life balance, self-care, and strategies for a successful transition into the teaching profession. The seminar is completed alongside the directed teaching experience and emphasizes reflection, leadership development, and readiness for the first year of teaching.
